Novelda

The town of Novelda lies about 60 kilometres inland from Torrevieja. Known as the Spanish capital of marble, it also mines clay, silica, gypsum and limestone. Among the town’s places of interest are the impressive monastery of Santa María Magdalena and Museum of Modernism. Holidaymakers to Torrevieja who fancy a bit of sightseeing can also enjoy wine tasting at a nearby bodega (winery). Those visiting with young family will find a municipal swimming pool, multi-court sports & leisure centre and an exciting paintball centre.

Novelda Town

Novelda is easily reached by car via the AP-7 motorway in around 50 minutes from Torrevieja. A good starting point for exploring the town is the Church of San Pedro. This is next to the wonderfully restored town hall and tourist information bureau. It’s worth popping into the bureau for a town map before heading off to explore. Around the town centre are some lovely plazas where you will see fine examples of 17th century architecture. Among the streets and plazas are a good selection of shops, pavement cafes, bars and restaurants.

Also worth a visit is the Museum of Modernism located on Carrer Major. The museum is housed is a beautiful art nouveau style building and displays artefacts from the 1920’s. If visiting during the scorching summer months, head for the municipal swimming pool. There are three pools, plenty of shade, lifeguards, changing rooms and an on-site cafe. Sporty visitors will find a good selection of sports courts and facilities at the sports & leisure centre.

Novelda Surrounds

A short distance out of town along the CV-835 is the NG Paintball Centre for a bit of rough and tumble. The more discerning visitor can enjoy a round of golf at Club de Golf Alenda. Boasting a commanding hilltop position with superb views over the town and countryside is the lovely  monastery of Santa María Magdalena. Its architecture is reminiscent of the works of Gaudí.

Indeed, the monastery has a church designed by a disciple of Antoni Gaudí. Visitors can also explore the Moorish Mola Castle. It lies near the monastery and has an unusual triangular tower. Casa Cesilia Winery is located in a beautiful rural setting not far from the monastery. Visitors can enjoy an interesting tour of the winery but most are there for the restaurant. This offers an excellent five star service. Multiple courses of the finest food are paired with the perfect wines. They have facilities for special occasions and there is a children’s playground.
