Cycling

Cycling is both a popular hobby, and means of getting around when on holiday, and with year round sunshine, beautiful scenery, decent roads and fantastic cycling trails through the many hills and Natural Parks, Torrevieja is the perfect place to explore by bike. There are a selection of bike hire companies in and around the city with prices averaging around 10€ per day which usually includes a helmet and basic tool kit, some offering road side assistance. High end racing bikes are harder to find and most road racers visiting the area tend to bring their bikes with them as they are very specialised machines and often customised to the owners size and riding style.

Cycling is an excellent activity for all the family, and for some serious fun without much effort, visitors can try their hand at downhill bike riding. An hour’s drive from Torrevieja is the popular city of Benidorm where downhill bike rides are organised from the top of Mt Aitana. All bikes and equipment are provided and riders are driven to the top of the mountain. After a brief safety talk and instructions where to stop for refreshments and photo opportunities, you just jump on your bike and let gravity do the hard work for the next 20 miles. For serious mountain bikers, week long mountain bike holidays are available, where riders will explore a dozen different trails of varying types of terrain, through some breathtaking countryside, valleys and mountains with all meals and accommodation provided.

Throughout Torrevieja’s countryside there are walking and cycling trails, and one that offers great scenery and resting places is Torrevieja’s Greenway. These are a very clever idea and can be found all over Spain, where local councils have converted old railway lines into walking and cycling paths. The Greenway takes you through some lovely countryside including the Torrevieja-La Mata Natural Park with it’s huge pink salt lakes and lovely flora & fauna.
